Ready for the rain, at home in the city.

UW freshmen get light rail at the campus edge, the U District out the door, and about eight months of gray drizzle. With the right gear, Seattle feels like home.

Why Washington is different

A campus inside a city

UW sits in Seattle's U District, with cheap eats on the Ave, the Burke-Gilman Trail along campus, and two light-rail stations within walking distance. The U-PASS covers regional transit, so getting-around gear matters more here than gear for the room.

People in Seattle skip the big umbrella and just wear the right jacket.

The gray season

Seattle's wet season runs roughly October through May: around 150 rainy days, but only about 39 inches, less than Houston. The darkest months, November through January, surprise families more than the rain; waterproof layers and a daylight lamp handle both.

Mountains out the window

The payoff is the setting. On clear days Mount Rainier appears from campus, and students head for trails year-round. The gear that keeps your freshman dry on a Tuesday commute gets them into the Cascades on a Saturday.

How we pick for Washington

Not a generic packing list.

Built from Washington’s own what-to-bring and prohibited-items policies, residence-hall realities, Seattle climate data, and the things Husky families say they wish they’d packed.

Built from official sources

We start from Washington’s own housing policies, hall layouts, and local climate data. Not a one-size-fits-all list.

Every pick has a reason

Each product explains exactly why it matters at Washington. No filler, no padding the list.

Updated, not static

As Husky families tell us what we missed, the guides get sharper. Last checked July 2026.
