What we research for each campus
Before we recommend anything, we build a picture of the school your student is moving to: the housing office’s what-to-bring and prohibited-items lists, the residence-hall pages, National Weather Service climate data, how students get around, and what parents there say they wish they’d packed. That’s why Michigan leads with winter and UCF with afternoon thunderstorms.
What disqualifies an item
Nice to have isn’t the bar. An item is cut if we can’t explain it in one sentence, if the dorm provides it, if policy bans it, or if it ends up under the bed until May. A list that never says “don’t buy” isn’t one you can trust.
The length rule
If everything is essential, nothing is. Guides stay around ten picks, organized in the order your student will actually need them: before move-in, the first weeks, then settling in. The goal is a list a family can finish, not a catalog.
